Salavat Yulaev edged Dynamo Minsk 2-1 in KHL action on Friday with things getting weird in the third period.

Maxim Mayorov looked to have beaten Alexander Yeryomenko to give Salavat a 2-1 lead, but officials didn’t stop play and signal a goal. Dynamo played on and transitioned into a 3-on-1 chance at the other end.

Well, no one told goalie Andrei Gavrilov, who thought his team had scored and wanted to celebrate with a sip of water. It turned out that he didn’t need to be ready to stop the scoring opportunity as Minsk muffed it up anyway.

Once play stopped the sequence was then review and Mayorov was finally rewarded with the goal.

You can watch the full sequence here.

One question that stands out is, even though it wouldn’t have counted anyway given the review, why didn’t the Dynamo forward carrying the puck into the zone just fire it into the goal? He was looking pass most of the way, but not even a peek to see where the netminder is? Even the trailing forward, Egor Dugin (No. 14), is pointing his stick at the net to say, “Shoot it!”

“I did not realize what was happening,” Gavrilov said afterward in the understatement of the day.
