Chargers ILB Mouton tears ACL, is out for year

San Diego Chargers linebacker Jonas Mouton tore his anterior cruciate ligament during the first day of training camp and will miss the 2013 season.

This is the second serious injury suffered by the Chargers' linebacker unit. Melvin Ingram, San Diego's first-round pick in 2012, was lost for the season weeks ago after suffering an ACL tear.

A shoulder injury sidelined Mouton, a second-round pick in 2011, for his entire rookie season. He played sparingly last year.

"We'll do the right thing to get him back to healthy in the future, and he will have rehab ahead of him," said head coach Mike McCoy. "It's just unfortunate. It's a bad part of the business. When you see these players come in here, they work so hard in the off-season. They put a lot of time and effort into it, and their entire life they've been playing the game. I know they've had some injuries before too, but it''s just an unfortunate thing.

"You feel so bad for the players, but it gives another person on the football team an opportunity. Injuries happen throughout the football season, so we have to do a great job as coaches and as players. The next guy has to step up and it's an opportunity for somebody. We wish him well in all his rehab and he'll be back."
