Cardinals release QB Skelton

The Arizona Cardinals released quarterback John Skelton on Monday, clearing the way for the anticipated addition of Carson Palmer.

Skelton was Arizona's starting quarterback for the 2012 season-opener, but had to leave that game with an ankle injury. He ended up starting six games in 2012, throwing nine interceptions with just two touchdown passes for the season.

He started 17 games over three seasons for Ken Whisenhunt and the Cardinals.

The Cardinals also announced quarterback Brian Hoyer signed his restricted free-agent tender.

The Cardinals reportedly are close to completing a deal with the Oakland Raiders that will bring Palmer to Arizona.
