Cardinals' flight to Boston delayed
The flight scheduled to take the St. Louis Cardinals from St. Louis to Boston for Wednesday's Game 5 of the World Series was delayed for nearly seven hours Tuesday because of mechanical issues.
After the plane, loaded with the team, sat on the runway for an extended period, another aircraft was brought in to make the flight to Boston.
The Cardinals arrived in Massachusetts after 11 p.m. Eastern time.
Cardinals manager Mike Matheny did his scheduled news conference with reporters at Fenway by phone while sitting aboard the plane.
"Yeah, we've been sitting on the runway for a while," he said, according to ESPNBoston.com. "But everybody seems to be doing all right. We're fortunate that our club allows our families to travel with us. We have some younger kids. But I'm impressed with how everybody has handled it. Fortunately we have plenty of food, snacks for the kids, lots of entertainment with on-board movies, and everybody travels with all their high-tech stuff. Most of these kids are pretty happy that they're not in school right now, and it's a great way to spend a day, and no complaints so far."
The Cardinals were not scheduled to have a workout at Fenway on Tuesday, so Matheny did not expect the delay to have a significant impact.
Cardinals starter Michael Wacha opposes Boston's John Lackey in Game 6 on Wednesday, with Boston leading the best-of-seven series 3-2.
"Everyone is just watching movies," Wacha said of the delay, according to the ESPN.com report. "They've got dinner on here for us and stuff. Everyone is just walking around. Nobody is in a bad mood or anything like that. The attitude is pretty good."
