This is something that has been bothering me since the news emerged on Friday that Buffalo Bills’ offensive coordinator Greg Roman had been fired. Why now? What happened behind the scenes? Was he used as a scapegoat for Rex Ryan? All these questions have been rushing through my head since then.

The truth is though, Roman’s firing was likely a mix of many factors. With reports saying that the owners met with offensive players to talk about Roman before his firing, I can see that the move was probably the right thing. However, why was Roman the only one shown the door if this is down to poor performance.

There is so much blame to go around here it’s not even funny. Sure the offense struggled week one, but it bounced back pretty well against the Jets considering Watkins’ struggled mightily with his bad foot. In fact, against New York it was the Ryan brother’s defense that let the team down, allowing 38-points to Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Jets offense.

Sure, Roman’s firing could generate some fire inside the players. In my honest opinion though, while the Bills’ were right to terminate Greg Roman as the offensive coordinator, his head should not have been the only one rolling. Given the terrible performance from the defense week two, at least one of the Ryan brothers should have followed him out the door.

With the situation in it’s current form, it seems awfully close to Rex throwing Roman under-the-bus for the team’s problems. Appeasing ownership with a coaching change, Rex chose to make Roman his scapegoat in an attempt to both save his own neck and potentially distract the fans’ from his defense’s poor Thursday night performance.

If we are judging this team based off it’s first two-games, I’d say the offense and defense are both on equal ground at this stage. Both played well one week and struggled the other. If were judging based on that, shouldn’t a defensive coach followed Roman through the door, or is the defense of limit’s because it’s run by the Super Mar… I mean Ryan brothers.

In the end, Rex Ryan is definitely responsible for the team’s poor start. He’s the head coach, he should have seen that there was problems early on, instead he chose to pump up the fan base with his outlandish comments. If the Bills’ continue to struggle, don’t be shocked if Ryan soon finds himself also out the door in Buffalo.
