Breaking down Larry Fitzgerald's restructured deal, cap impact
The restructured contract of Arizona Cardinals star wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald lowered his salary-cap figure from $18 million to $8.6 million in 2014, a net savings of $9.4 million against the cap.
The Cardinals accomplished this by converting $11.75 million of his base salary for 2014 into a guaranteed roster bonus for salary-cap purposes. That's in addition to the $45 million guaranteed total from his original contract.
His new base salary for 2014 is $1 million.
However, his salary-cap figure leaps to $23.6 million in 2015 when he'll have an $8 million base salary, $250,000 workout bonus and an $8 million roster bonus due on the fifth day of the league year.
It's considered likely that a decision would be made on Fitzgerald's contract before that bonus is due next year.
In 2016, Fitzgerald is due a $15 million base salary with a salary-cap figure of $17.6 million.
In 2017, Fitzgerald is due a $14.75 million base salary with a $250,000 workout bonus.
The base salary in this option year de-escalates by $8 million if he catches less than 70 passes in 2016 or de-escalates by $3 million if he catches between 70 passes and 79 passes in 2016.
In 2018, he's due a $14.75 million base salary and a $250,000 workout bonus. The base de-escalates by $8 million if he has less than 70 catches in 2017 of de-escalates by $3 million if he's between 70 catches and 79 catches in 2017.
