Jay Cutler’s 2015-2016 season would not be defined as resurgent, but it was one that was marked with improvement. The veteran signal caller made smarter, less costly decisions throughout.

As Bears fans know by now, Cutler has the reputation of being a gunslinger, but last year was different.

Jay Cutler: Another OC

For as much praise as Jay Cutler received for scaling back the turnovers last season, OC Adam Gase received even more. Gase, who left to become the Miami Dolphins’ head coach this offseason, has earned a reputation as a quarterbacks guru. He is even credited with getting the most production possible out of Peyton Manning while he was the OC in Denver.

The knee-jerk rumblings from the Bears’ faithful have been a restored lack of faith in Jay Cutler. With Adam Gase gone, won’t Cutler revert to his old risky, pouty ways?

The veteran signal caller will not, according to promoted OC Dowell Loggains whom, like Gase, was new to the Bears’ staff last season. Loggains’ response and explanation to the Cutler situation should help ease the anxiety. After all, as Chicago’s quarterbacks coach last season, Loggains worked directly with both Cutler and Gase.

According to Jeff Dickerson, ESPN Staff Writer, Loggains stated that the verbage and basics of his offense will mirror the offense that Gase ran last season. This offensive was conducive to a more conservative Jay Cutler, but is this an approach that Bears fans should be comfortable with this season?

In Alshon Jeffery, Chicago has one of the most physically dominant wide receivers in the league, but Cutler had to adjust to losing lifelong teammate, Brandon Marshall. Also, Kevin White suffered a season-ending injury before the season started.

With Kevin White healthy and without Matt Forte to dump the ball off to when plays breakdown, it might be most beneficial for the Bears to pursue more of a vertical offense. In an offense more dedicated to pushing the ball downfield, Cutler will be in a position to make more dangerous throws.

Expect Cutler to throw more than the 11 interceptions that he threw last year, but also expect him to throw more than 21 touchdowns. The Bears new signal caller has confidence that the strides Cutler took last season were a reflection of his football IQ and willingness to put in the work in the film room.

As difficult as it is at times, Loggains wants Bears fans to place their trust in Jay Cutler.
