Baseball-Major League Baseball roundup

Aug 8 (The Sports Xchange) - The Toronto Blue Jays acquired infielder Cliff Pennington from the Arizona Diamondbacks during Saturday's game against the New York Yankees. The Blue Jays, seeking some help at second base, also will acquire cash considerations and will send minor league shortstop Dawel Lugo to the Diamondbacks. Pennington can play shortstop and second base and has a reputation for good defensive range. He is expected to split time at second base with Ryan Goins until rookie Devon Travis returns from a left shoulder injury. In 157 plate appearances with the Diamondbacks this season, Pennington batted .237. --- Texas Rangers first baseman Mike Napoli was added to the active roster and batted fifth against the Seattle Mariners on Saturday. Napoli was removed from Boston's starting lineup just moments prior to the Red Sox game in Detroit on Friday night and traded back to the Rangers, for whom he hit 54 home runs and drove in 131 runs during the 2011-12 seasons. To make room for Napoli on the 25-man roster, Texas optioned outfielder Ryan Rua to Triple-A Round Rock. --- Houston left-hander Oliver Perez, acquired late Friday from Arizona in a trade for minor league left-hander Junior Garcia, joined the Astros on Saturday and will be activated Sunday. Perez will give Houston a second left-handed reliever, joining Tony Sipp. "Another left-handed pitcher can be very advantageous for us," Astros manager A.J. Hinch said. "Then when you throw on top of that, he's good, he's got experience, he's pitched in a variety of roles. It'll be a good addition for us." --- Right-hander Vance Worley, who was designated for assignment July 30, has cleared waivers and the Pittsburgh Pirates are hopeful he will accept an assignment to Triple-A Indianapolis. --- The Chicago Cubs placed catcher David Ross on the bereavement list and called up outfielder Matt Szczur from Triple-A Iowa. Szczur joined the Cubs for the sixth time this season. --- Mariners left-handed reliever Charlie Furbush threw a 40-pitch bullpen session on Saturday and could soon be cleared to make a rehab start. Furbush has been on the disabled list since right before the All-Star break because of tendinitis in his left biceps. --- Oakland A's left-handed closer Sean Doolittle (strained left shoulder) said he felt "a little rusty" Friday in his first rehab appearance for Class A Stockton, despite throwing a scoreless inning. "I was just a little out of synch." Doolittle said he expects to pitch another inning for Stockton on Sunday. --- Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Desmond Jennings (knee bursitis) was scratched from a rehab assignment game for Triple-A Durham on Friday. Rays manager Kevin Cash said Jennings still is working on stealing bases and sliding in game situations. --- New York Mets left-hander Alex Torres cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Memphis. Mets manager Terry Collins also confirmed that third baseman David Wright will begin his rehab assignment on Monday. (Editing by Larry Fine) ))
