Baseball-Major League Baseball roundup

Aug 17 (The Sports Xchange) - Toronto Blue Jays slugging third baseman Josh Donaldson left Wednesday's game against the New York Yankees with a jammed right thumb. Donaldson started as Toronto's designated hitter and went 0-for-4 with a pair of groundouts and strikeouts. The reigning American League Most Valuable Player was injured during his fourth at-bat, as he grounded out to second base for the final out of the sixth inning. Earlier Donaldson tossed his bat after striking out in the third and it angered manager John Gibbons. Television cameras caught him and Gibbons yelling at each other before being separated by shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and catcher Josh Thole. Donaldson is batting .289 with 28 home runs and 80 RBIs this season. -- Veteran right-handed reliever Jonathan Papelbon, released by the Washington Nationals on Saturday at his request, is getting interest from multiple teams, including the Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs. The former closer expects to make a decision on his next team within 24 hours, a source told ESPN. Red Sox manager John Farrell told reporters Tuesday he has reached out to Papelbon personally. Should the free agent sign with Boston, Farrell said he would not be the closer. -- The Cleveland Indians placed right-hander Josh Tomlin on the family medical emergency list. Tomlin has returned to his home in Tyler, Texas, to address a family matter. He will be on the list for three to five days. Tomlin started Monday's game against the Boston Red Sox and is 11-6 with a 4.14 ERA this season. Right-hander Danny Salazar, who has been on the 15-day disabled list with a sore elbow, will be activated Thursday, when he is scheduled to start against the Chicago White Sox.
