April 17 (The Sports Xchange) - Top prospect Kris Bryant batted cleanup and played third base for the Chicago Cubs in his major league debut against the San Diego Padres on Friday. Bryant, who hit .321 with three homers and 10 RBIs in seven games at Triple-A Iowa, struck out three times and grounded out once in the Cubs' 5-4 loss. The 23-year-old Bryant replaced third baseman Mike Olt (broken wrist) on the Cubs' roster. By waiting until Friday to bring Bryant to the big leagues, the Cubs will retain his rights for an extra year before he is eligible to become a free agent in 2021. The No. 2 overall draft pick in 2013 was selected the minor league player of the year last season after hitting .325 with 43 home runs and 110 RBIs in Double-A and Triple-A. - - - The Kansas City Royals sent outfielder Terrance Gore back to the minors and promoted outfielder Reymond Fuentes. Gore was optioned to Double-A Northwest Arkansas, and Fuentes was called up from Triple-A Omaha. - - - Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Chris Stewart came off the 15-day disabled list, and the Pirates optioned catcher Tony Sanchez to Triple-A Indianapolis. Stewart missed the start of the season with a hamstring injury, which he suffered on March 9. Sanchez went 3-for-8 (.375) in three games for the Pirates. - - - With third baseman David Wright injured, the New York Mets recalled infielder Danny Muno from Triple-A Las Vegas and optioned right-hander Rafael Montero to Vegas.
