Baseball-Highlights of Wednesday's MLB games

(Adds late games) April 20 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights from Major League Baseball games on Wednesday: White Sox 2, Angels 1 Chris Sale became the first four-game winner in the major leagues this season as the Chicago White Sox beat the Anaheim Angels. The left-hander (4-0) gave up an unearned run, struck out three and walked none in seven-plus innings as the White Sox won their second straight game. The Angels dropped their second in a row and fifth in their last six games. Sale, who improved to 5-0 in seven career games against the Angels, gave up two hits to Mike Trout, both singles to center. Tyler Saladino gave Chicago a 1-0 lead with a first-inning home run to left. The White Sox added a run in the fifth as Alex Avila led off with a double to center and scored on a combined Austin Jackson sacrifice bunt and error by C.J. Cron. Reds 6, Rockies 5 Tucker Barnhart's single in the bottom of the ninth inning drove home Brandon Phillips with the winning run, lifting Cincinnati over Colorado. Jay Bruce and Adam Duvall hit back-to-back homers in the second inning to stake Cincinnati to an early lead. With the score tied 5-5 in the ninth, consecutive singles by Phillips and Bruce off Christian Bergman put runners at first and third with no outs. With one out, Barnhart ripped Bergman's pitch into left field and Phillips jogged home. Cardinals 5, Cubs 3 Carlos Martinez made sure St. Louis stayed in control, checking Chicago on three hits over seven innings in a 5-3 Cardinals' victory that was interrupted for more than three hours in the seventh inning by rain. In improving to 3-0, Martinez went the distance, issuing three walks and fanning five. Mariners 2, Indians 1 Taijuan Walker pitched six innings without allowing an earned run and Norichika Aoki's two-run triple provided all of the offense as the Seattle Mariners beat the Cleveland Indians. Aoki's two-out, two-run triple in the second inning was the big hit in the game while Walker and three relievers combined on a four-hitter. Walker (1-0) pitched six innings, allowing one unearned run on three hits, with six strikeouts and no walks as he continued his mastery over Cleveland. Nationals 3, Marlins 1 Bryce Harper, who leads the majors in RBIs, drove in his 21st run to help the Washington Nationals defeat the Miami Marlins. Harper went 1-for-4 with a run-scoring double. Teammate Daniel Murphy went 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 12 games, the longest active run in the National League. Murphy leads the majors with a .429 batting average. Washington's Ryan Zimmerman added an RBI double, and Michael Taylor hit a solo homer. Athletics 5, Yankees 2 Kendall Graveman pitched effectively into the seventh inning and the Oakland Athletics scored three times in the top of the fourth inning en route to a 5-2 victory over the New York Yankees. Billy Burns doubled twice and had three hits while scoring the A's first run of the fourth. Chris Coghlan had an RBI double, Josh Reddick added a run-scoring single and Stephen Vogt lifted a sacrifice fly as Oakland won its fourth straight. Khris Davis added a two-run single in the eighth for the Athletics. Those runs were enough for Graveman (1-1), who allowed one run and third hits in 6-1/3 innings. Red Sox 7, Rays 3 David Ortiz hit a pair of doubles and drove in three runs and Mookie Betts blasted a two-run home run as the Boston Red Sox snapped their three-game skid with a 7-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. Xander Bogaerts and Chris Young also drove in runs for Boston (7-7), which had a season-high 12 hits after being shut out 3-0 by the Rays in extra innings Tuesday. Tigers 3, Royals 2 Jordan Zimmermann kept putting up zeros, and Victor Martinez collected his 1,000th career RBI as the Detroit Tigers staved off the Kansas City Royals. Zimmermann, whom the Tigers signed to a five-year, $110 million free agent contract on Nov. 30, pitched 6-1/3 scoreless innings to extend his shutout streak to 19-1/3 innings in winning his first three Detroit starts. Zimmermann allowed seven hits, six of them singles, walked one and struck out eight. Dodgers 5, Braves 3 (10 innings) Justin Turner drove in the go-ahead run with a double to help the Los Angeles Dodgers claim a 5-3 win over the Atlanta Braves in 10 innings. With runners on first and second, Turner hit a shallow fly ball off reliever Jason Grilli into left-center field. Speedy center fielder Mallex Smith ran hard and stretched out for the ball but could not hold it. The ball bounced off Smith's glove and scored Chase Utley, who opened the inning with a walk and stolen base. The Dodgers tacked on an insurance run on a single by Yasmani Grandal against Alexi Ogando, who relieved Grilli with the bases loaded. Orioles 4, Blue Jays 3 (10 innings) Caleb Joseph scored on a passed ball with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Baltimore Orioles a 4-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. Joseph started the game-winning rally with a two-out double off of rookie Joe Biagini (0-1). Joseph then moved to third on Joey Rickard's third hit of the game before Manny Machado walked to load the bases. Joseph then raced home from third on catcher Josh Thole's passed ball on a low pitch from Biagini. Phillies 5, Mets 4 (11 innings) Peter Bourjos drove in the winning run with a two-out infield single in the bottom of the 11th, lifting the Philadelphia Phillies to a 5-4 victory over the New York Mets. Bourjos, batting ninth in manager Pete Mackanin's reshuffled lineup, victimized Hansel Robles, the last of six Mets pitchers. Jeanmar Gomez (2-0) pitched two scoreless innings in relief to earn the victory. Robles fell to 0-1. Rangers 2, Astros 1 Cole Hamels improved to a perfect 7-0 at Globe Life Park after the Rangers' win over the Houston Astros. The victory wasn't the cleanest for Hamels against the aggressive-swinging Astros. Hamels hit three batters and walked three, while often working around men on base during his 6-2/3 innings. Seven strikeouts and three double plays aided Hamels' cause, as Houston stranded seven baserunners against him and nine for the game. Brewers 10, Twins 4 Chris Carter, Aaron Hill and Domingo Santana homered and Ryan Braun reached base four times as the Milwaukee Brewers used a late-inning offensive outburst to hand the Minnesota Twins a 10-4 loss. Braun had two singles, walked twice, scored twice and drove in a run, raising his average to .340 on the young season. Hill also had two hits -- his first multi-hit game of the season -- including his first home run of the year, a solo shot in the sixth that broke a 4-4 tie. Padres 8, Pirates 2 Left-hander Drew Pomeranz stymied Pittsburgh over 6-2/3 innings and the San Diego Padres won for the third time in four games. Pomeranz (2-1), who came to San Diego in an offseason trade with the Oakland A's, allowed an unearned run on four hits as the Padres clinched their first home series win of the season. He struck-out a career-best 10 batters and walked three while throwing a season-high 111 pitches. Diamondbacks 2, Giants 1 Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Welington Castillo broke a scoreless tie with a two-run, seventh-inning home run off Madison Bumgarner, helping Zack Greinke record an eighth straight victory over the San Francisco Giants. Greinke and Bumgarner had dueling shutouts until the Diamondbacks finally broke through on Castillo's third homer of the season in the seventh inning. The hit also scored Yasmani Tomas.
