Baseball-Highlights of Saturday's Major League Baseball games

Aug 28 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Saturday's Major League Baseball games: Yankees 13, Orioles 3 Gary Sanchez became the quickest player in major league history to reach 11 career home runs and the New York Yankees collected 18 hits in a 13-5 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. After becoming the third player to get 10 home runs in his first 21 games on Friday, Sanchez reached 11 in his 79th career at-bat when he lined a solo home run off Dylan Bundy (7-5) into the right-center field seats with two outs in the fourth. It was the rookie catcher's 18th extra-base hit, ninth home run in 10 games and 11th homer in 20 games this month. He earned a curtain call from the crowd at Yankee Stadium. Blue Jays 8, Twins 7 Melvin Upton Jr tripled in the tying run and continued home on an outfield error in the eighth inning as Toronto came back to defeat Minnesota. Edwin Encarnacion homered and had three RBIs for the Blue Jays, who gave the Twins their ninth straight loss. Rockies 9, Nationals 4 (11 innings) Charlie Blackmon had three hits, including two home runs, and three RBIs as Colorado Rockies beat first-place Washington to snap a four-game losing streak. Blackmon hit a two-run homer off Yusmeiro Petit (3-4) in the top of the 11th inning to give the Rockies a 6-4 lead. It was the fifth time this year Blackmon, with 23 homers, had at least two homers in a game. Dodgers 3, Cubs 2 Corey Seager set a mark for home runs by a Dodgers shortstop in a season, leading Los Angeles to the victory over Chicago and snapping the Cubs' four-game winning streak. Seager cranked his 23rd home run, the most by a shortstop in a season in franchise history. Seager broke the 86-year-old mark of Glenn Wright, who hit 22 in 1930. Padres 1, Marlins 0 Clayton Richard pitched seven scoreless innings to win his first game of the year and Ryan Schimpf slugged a home run as San Diego defeated Miami at Marlins Park. Schimpf's homer, which came on a 3-2 pitch in the fourth inning, was his 16th this season. He pulled a 96-mph Jose Urena fastball over the fence in right-center. Red Sox 8, Royals 3 Boston snapped a three-game losing streak by rapping out 12 hits, including three home runs, and Dustin Pedroia just missed tying a record for consecutive at-bats with a hit in a win against Kansas City at Fenway Park. The Red Sox, who remained one game behind the Toronto Blue Jays for first place in the American League East, had scored seven runs during their three-game losing streak. Mets 12, Phillies 1 Yoenis Cespedes hit a long three-run homer in the fourth inning to break open a close game as New York continued its power surge with a rout of Philadelphia at Citi Field. The Mets, who hit four homers for the second straight game, have won four in a row and six of their last seven and are 2 1/2 games behind the St Louis Cardinals in the race for the National League's second wild-card spot. Astros 6, Rays 2 Dallas Keuchel pitched seven solid innings while Alex Bregman paced a balanced offensive attack as Houston claimed a win over Tampa Bay at Minute Maid Park. Keuchel (9-12) mitigated the damage of nine hits by issuing only one walk. He was served by a pair of inning-ending double plays in the first and second innings and closed the sixth and seventh with strikeouts to strand runners in scoring position. White Sox 9, Mariners 3 Avisail Garcia went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and two RBIs, and Chicago cruised to a win over Seattle. Jose Abreu, Alex Avila and Tyler Saladino added home runs as the White Sox offense belted 15 hits. Chicago earned its 10th win in its past 15 home games. Athletics 3, Cardinals 2 Capitalising on a defensive mistake, Oakland rallied for two runs in the top of the eighth inning to dump St Louis at Busch Stadium as the A's won for just the third time in their last 14 road games. Angels 3, Tigers 2 Kaleb Cowart's first home run of the season, a two-run fly ball to right in the third inning, and strong relief pitching by scratched scheduled starter Jhoulys Chacin led Los Angeles to a victory over Detroit. Pirates 9, Brewers 6 Josh Harrison had three hits and Gregory Polonco cleared the bases with a three-run double as Pittsburgh extended its winning streak to three games with a victory over Milwaukee at Miller Park. The Pirates combined for 12 hits, which helped offset a short outing from rookie Jameson Taillon, who was charged with five runs, seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts in three innings. Reds 13, Diamondbacks 0 Scott Schebler had his first career two-homer game and Joey Votto, Zack Cozart and Adam Duvall also homered in Cincinnati's victory over Arizona at Chase Field. Schebler had a two-run homer in a fourth-run first inning and a three-run homer to cap a five-run second. He had a career-high five RBIs and tied a career best with three hits. Rangers 7, Indians 0 Right-hander A.J. Griffin pitched six scoreless innings as Texas shut out Cleveland for the second time in three days. It marked the first scoreless start for Griffin (6-3) this season, and he also ended a string of 11 straight starts in which he had given up at least one homer. Braves 3, Giants 1 Matt Kemp gave Atlanta an early lead with a three-run home run and right-hander Mike Foltynewicz carried it into the eighth inning with a five-hit pitching performance, lifting the Braves to a victory over San Francisco. Mauricio Cabrera pitched out of an eighth-inning jam and closer Jim Johnson threw a 1-2-3 ninth for his 13th save, helping the Braves square the three-game series with the Giants at one game apiece.
