Auburn wins fifth straight after beating Ole Miss 40-29

Auburn isn’t going away yet.

The Tigers won their fifth game in a row after defeating Ole Miss 40-29 to pull into a tie with Texas A&M for second in the SEC West.

Auburn got the win thanks to the rushing of Kamryn Pettway, who had 236 yards and a touchdown. During this winning streak, the Tigers have gotten back to their run-first roots and it’s worked. The Tigers racked up 307 yards on the ground while quarterback Sean White completed 15 of 22 passes for 247 yards and a touchdown.

While the Auburn offense did its part to secure the win, the defense employed a bend-but-don’t-break approach to the highly potent Ole Miss attack. Quarterback Chad Kelly set the SEC career passing mark with 465 yards on 36-of-59 passing. He also threw three touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough.

The two teams traded scores throughout the first half, but in the second half, the Rebels turned the ball over on downs twice, and Kelly threw an interception the Tigers ultimately turned into a touchdown.

Ole Miss dropped to 3-5 on the season with games against Georgia Southern, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt and Mississippi State remaining. The Rebels will need to win at least three of those contests to qualify for a bowl game.

Auburn has games against Vanderbilt, Georgia and Alabama A&M before the all-important Iron Bowl against Alabama at the end of the regular season. Depending on how Alabama fares against LSU next weekend, the Iron Bowl could decide the SEC West.
