Arroyo pitch sets off tempers

RHP Bronson Arroyo took no exception to San Francisco starter Ryan Vogelsong taking exception to Arroyo's up-and-in pitch on Vogelsong's bunt attempt in the Cincinnati Reds' 4-3 loss to the Giants Sunday.

Vogelsong fouled it off, then slammed the bat down and shouted at Arroyo. Both benches emptied. The players just milled around -- no punches or even shoving.

Arroyo and Vogelsong were teammates with Pittsburgh in 2001.

"I played with Ryan a long time," Arroyo said. "I called over there and talked to him. He had every right to be irritated. You can't get up near a guy's head. I hit (Buster) Posey up near his head (earlier in the game).

"They've got every right in the world to be irritated."

Arroyo didn't think a real fight would happen.

"I knew it wasn't going to get out of hand," Arroyo said. "Ryan knows me well enough to know there wasn't any malice. In the heat of battle, man, obviously guys are going to get frustrated and have allegiance to their club."

Vogelsong got the sacrifice down. Arroyo said something to Vogelsong as he jogged off.

"I was telling him it was on me," Arroyo said. "There's no excuse for it."

Arroyo later called Vogelsong.
