Alfredsson signs with Detroit

Daniel Alfredsson signed a one-year deal with the Detroit Red Wings, a day after informing the Ottawa Senators his 18-year run with that franchise was ending.

Alfredsson's contract is worth between $5 million and $5.65 million, according to multiple reports.

Alfredsson, 40, began his career with the Senators in 1995 and has played 1,178 games with 1,108 points.

Detroit's system isn't a carbon copy of the Ottawa scheme, but they have many similarities having been derived by Mike Babcock. The Boston Bruins also made a run at Alfredsson, who joins a roster with many Swedish players including Red Wings Henrik Zetterberg, Jonathan Ericsson and Johan Franzen.
