Alabama, Florida State 1-2 in BCS standings

Alabama and Florida State held onto the top two spots in the BCS standings released Sunday evening, while Ohio State has a razor-thin edge over Baylor for the No. 3 spot.

At this point, it appears almost certain Alabama and Florida State will meet in the BCS national championship game in Pasadena on Jan. 6 if both teams win their remaining games.

Alabama is No. 1 with a .9914 BCS average based on the three components of the formula: the USA Today coaches poll, the Harris poll and the BCS computers. Florida State is not far behind with .9661 average.

Both have a healthy lead over unbeaten Ohio State, but if either Alabama or Florida State should lose a game, the battle between Ohio State and Baylor for the second spot will be a heated one. Ohio State's BCS average of .8869 is just .0013 ahead of Baylor's .8856.

The Bears might pass the Buckeyes next week if they beat Oklahoma State, which is No. 10 in this week's BCS standings. Ohio State faces unranked Indiana, which is 4-6.

Oregon is the highest-ranked one-loss team at No. 5 in the BCS standings, but the Ducks have only a slim lead over No. 6 Auburn, which is 10-1 and has a bye this week before facing No. 1 Alabama.

This is the final year of the BCS, with a four-team playoff to determine the national champion next season.
