49ers QB Smith improving after concussion

San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said in his weekly press conference Monday that quarterback Alex Smith is doing well a day after sustaining a concussion against the St. Louis Rams.

Harbaugh said per CSN Bay Area that Smith had a good night's sleep and is visiting a neurologist Monday afternoon.

If Smith cannot play Nov. 19 against the Chicago Bears, Colin Kaepernick will make his first NFL start. Kaepernick filled in for Smith after he left the 49ers' 24-24 tie against the Rams on Sunday.

Smith also had a concussion in 2011 but did not miss a game.
