NFL Grades Week 3: Are the Cowboys actually good?

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is the team's ultimate cheerleader. Every year, he thinks his team is going to win the Super Bowl and every year, the Cowboys end up going 8-8 and missing the playoffs.

However, things were different in 2014: For once, Jones didn't have high hopes going into the season. Six days before the regular season started, Jones said the Cowboys were looking at an 'uphill battle' going into this year.

Maybe Jones should be negative all the time because whatever they're doing in Dallas seems to be working. Since falling behind 28-3 to the 49ers in Week 1, the Cowboys have outscored their opponents 74-41.

Yes, Tony Romo's back is made of glass and yes, you can probably only name two players on the Cowboys defense, but that hasn't really hurt the team so far. Lets not count those first two quarters against San Francisco.

In Week 2, the Cowboys basically took Romo out of the gameplan and it didn't matter. DeMarco Murray ran for 167 yards and the Cowboy D shutdown the Titans offense as Dallas rolled to a 26-10 win. If you're the Cowboys, knowing you can win without Romo is about as encouraging as it gets.

In Week 3, the defense didn't show up -- and when I say the defense didn't show up, I mean it gave up 327 yards passing to Austin Davis -- but the defense not showing up didn't matter because Murray and Romo carried the team.

Those two wins gave Dallas back-to-back road wins for the first time since 2012.

Five of the Cowboys' next eight games seem winnable. Dallas plays Jacksonville, Houston, Washington and the Giants twice. Stephen Jones probably shouldn't fire up the party bus for a trip to the playoffs just yet, but the Cowboys could be a dark horse team in the NFC.

Maybe that guy in the Cowboys ticket office who mailed out playoff tickets in August knows something we don't know.

Team

Grade

Analysis

Chargers 22, Bills 10

A-

It would've been easy for the Chargers to have letdown this week: They were coming off a win over the Seahawks and they had to travel across the country for a 10 a.m. PT kickoff. Fortunately for San Diego, Philip Rivers doesn't do letdowns. Rivers threw for 256 yards and two touchdowns in the win.

C-

The Bills offensive line put together their ugliest game of the year. EJ Manuel rarely had time to throw and things weren't much better in the running game. If you take out one 17-yard run by Fred Jackson, the Bills rushing total was only 70 yards on 21 carries.

Eagles 37, Redskins 34

B

If RG3 wants to take an extra 10-12 weeks to let his ankle heal, Redskins fans probably won't mind. Making his first start of the season, Kirk Cousins threw for 427 yards and three touchdowns. However, not everyone was impressed with Cousins, some people think he still sucks.

A

Chip Kelly got rid of DeSean Jackson because he thought his team could win without him and that's exactly what the Eagles have done. In the "DeSean Jackson Revenge Bowl," DeSean Jackson did not get revenge. Nick Foles proved he doesn't need Jackson at all by throwing for 325 yards and three touchdowns.

Bengals 33, Titans 7

F+

Bishop Sankey is the 'plus' part of the F-plus here. The Titans running back averaged 6.1 yards per carry on 10 carries against the Bengals. Other than that, it was ugly for Tennessee.

A

Did Jay Gruden hold back Andy Dalton or did Dalton hold back Gruden? I think we finally have the answer to that question. With Hue Jackson calling plays, the Bengals offense has looked unstoppable. On a related note: Mohamed Sanu had more touchdown passes on Sunday than Jake Locker.

Cowboys 34, Rams 31

B+

Tony Romo threw a pick-six and Dallas fell behind 21-0, but somehow, the Cowboys still won. How'd that happen? Romo and DeMarco Murray. Besides the interception, Romo only threw four other incompletions in the game. Murray finished with 100 yards and a touchdown.

B-

We're only two and a half games into the Austin Davis-era, but it's been the craziest two and a half games in recent Rams history. After throwing for 235 yards against Tampa Bay, Davis topped himself with 327 yards and three TDs. Once Davis gets the 'not throwing interceptions' thing figured out, the Rams offense could be scary. Of course, the Davis-era could be a short one if Jared Cook beats him up.

Giants 30, Texans 17

D-

Everyone watching the Texans play on Sunday pretty much spent the entire game wondering how this team started 2-0. Ryan Fitzpatrick looked bad (three interceptions) and this team probably isn't going to win many games without Arian Foster, who didn't play due to an injury.

A

Just when you think the Giants are going to go 0-16, they come up with a game like this. Eli Manning shook off his struggles from the past two weeks and threw for 234 yards and two touchdowns in the win. It was only the second time since the beginning of last season that Manning's thrown two or more TDs with zero interceptions.

Ravens 23, Browns 21

A-

The Ravens clearly aren't distracted by distractions. Even with the Ray Rice story still hanging over their head, the Ravens went out and got a big division win. It was mostly because of Steve Smith, who is distracted by nothing. The 35-year-old tallied 101 yards receiving , including a 32-yarder in the fourth quarter that set up Baltimore's winning field goal.

B-

If you own a Johnny Manziel jersey, you might just want to keep that thing in the closet. No, the Browns didn't win, but Brian Hoyer looked like a guy who doesn't plan on giving up the starting QB job this season.

Lions 19, Packers 7

D+

The only reason this grade isn't lower is because the Packers defense showed up in Detroit. Unfortunately for Green Bay, Aaron Rodgers and the Packer offense didn't. The Packers defense forced 3 turnovers and only gave up 10 points (How did the Lions scored their other 9 points? Keep reading)

B

The Lions didn't even need their offense on Sunday because the team's defense scored outscored the Packers on their own. Don Carey returned a fumble for a TD and the Lions added a safety for the 9-7 win. Wait, the Lions offense points did count, the final score was 19-7.

Colts 44, Jaguars 17

A

The Jaguars had no answers for Andrew Luck. As a matter of fact, it didn't even look like they knew what the questions were. Luck threw for 370 yards and added four touchdown passes.  The best news for the Colts: They're no longer tied for last place in the AFC South.

F-

The Jaguars don't just get an 'F' for this game, they have an 'F' for the season so far. Over the past 10 quarters, the Jaguars have been outscored 119-20. On the bright side, Blake Bortles did play and he did lead Jacksonville to its only points, so you have that going for you, Jaguars fans.

Patriots 16, Raiders 9

B-

When Dennis Allen gets fired -- and he's probably going to get fired -- he can point to that time he almost beat the Patriots in New England. The Raiders got down to the six-yard line with one minute left, but couldn't punch the ball in the end zone.

B-

Stephen Gostkowski isn't married to a supermodel and he doesn't do commercials for Uggs, but maybe he should because he's been the Patriots most consistent player this season. Gostkowski has hit two or more field goals in all three games this season, including Sunday, where he hit three in New England's win.

Saints 20, Vikings 9

C+

The bad news for the Vikings: They lost. The good news for them: They might not have to start Matt Cassel ever again. Teddy Bridgewater made his NFL debut and you looked like he knew what he was doing: Bridgewater finished 12 of 20 for 150 yards.

B+

Drew Brees got suplexed in this game -- and that's really all you need to know. Despite the suplex, Brees still threw for 293 yards and two touchdowns. The Saints defense was the story of the game though. After being embarrassed in Weeks 1 and 2, the Saints kept the Vikings out of the end zone and gave up less than 250 yards of total offense.

Cardinals 23, 49ers 14

C

The 49ers have a major problem and their major problem is that they can't score in the fourth quarter. The 1-2 NIners have been outscored 31-0 in the fourth so far this season. The 49ers have also have other problems, but there's too many to list here.

A

Drew Stanton is unbeatable. Those are words you probably thought you'd never see in a sentence in you life, but they're a fact. Stanton was unfazed by the 49ers defense and threw for 244 yards and two TDs in Arizona's huge division win over San Francisco.

Chiefs 34, Dolphins 15

A+

The Chiefs season could have gone into full collapse with a loss to Miami, but that didn't happen to Knile Davis and Joe McKnight. Davis, who started for the injured Jamaal Charles, ran for 132 yards and a touchdown. Then there was McKnight, who scored his first career touchdown -- and his second career touchdown -- as the Chiefs rolled.

C-

Going into Sunday, the Dolphins were 1-7 in games where Ryan Tannehill threw 40 or more passes in a game. Guess what happened against the Chiefs? Ryan Tannehill threw 40 or more passes.

Steelers at Panthers

Falcons 56, Buccaneers 14

F-

A complete and utter embarrassment. The Bucs fumbled, bungled, picked and pocked their way around the field. You don't often see a team dominated like that in the NFL. It felt like Alabama playing an FCS school for 90 percent of the game.

A+

An all-around great performance from the Falcons. Matt Ryan was nearly perfect, Steven Jackson ran well, the defense locked down the Bucs all night, managed to score and Devin Hester held a dance party. Big win to get to 2-1 for Atlanta.

Bears at Jets
