Retired USWNT star Abby Wambach arrested for DUI in Oregon

Retired United States women's national team star Abby Wambach was arrested for investigation of driving under the influence early Sunday morning in Portland, Ore.

Wambach was stopped on Saturday night after she reportedly ran a red light in her Range Rover near downtown, the Associated Press reported from a statement by Portland police Sgt. Peter Simpson.

Simpson said Wambach failed field sobriety tests before being arrested. She also failed a breath test at the police precinct, according to Simpson.

The Multnomah County Sherriff's Office said Wambach was booked at 2:02 a.m. local time Sunday on a charge of misdemeanor DUI, ESPN reported.

The AP reported that Wambach, according to jail booking records, was released Sunday on her own recognizance.

KATU News in Portland tweeted a photo of Wambach's mugshot taken by the Multnomah County Sherriff's Office.

Wambach addressed the matter on her Facebook page to explain what happened after she left a dinner at a friend's house.

"Those that know me, know that I have always demanded excellence from myself. I have let myself and others down," Wambach wrote. "I take full responsibility for my actions. This is all on me. I promise that I will do whatever it takes to ensure that my horrible mistake is never repeated."

"I am so sorry to my family, friends, fans and those that look to follow a better example."

Wambach made headlines earlier in the week after announcing that she would donate her brain to concussion research along with ex-USWNT teammate Megan Rapinoe. The two join former USA star Brandi Chastain and her commitment to the cause of learning more about the degenerative brain disease Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), which has been linked to repetitive head trauma in sports.

Of course, Wambach's former team was in the spotlight last week for filing a wage inequality complaint against U.S. Soccer. The federation and U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati responded by strongly refuting those charges.
