Returning to his home nation for the weekend after not being selected by his Russian club Terek Grozny, Belgian international Jonathan Legear decided to let his hair down and enjoy a night out in the town of Tongeren.
On his way home at around 5:30 on Sunday morning, Legear stopped into an Esso (Exxon) gas station, but after reportedly mistaking the brake for the gas pedal in his Porsche — which, of course, is a very easy mistake to make at 5:30 a.m. after an evening of relaxation — he ended up making more of a "crashy" entrance than he intended. Eurosport reports:
Belgian international footballer Jonathan Legear has said he was "only slightly" over the drink-drive limit after crashing his car into a petrol station.
Amazingly only one man, a 21-year-old from Tongeren, suffered minor injuries, however Legear caused significant damage.
An Esso spokesperson said: "The pump automisation has been destroyed. We estimate the amount of damage between 250,000 and 300,000 euros."
It's incredible that only one man was injured in this incident, but the report does reveal that up to 1,000 cans of soda were tragically lost. In a statement delivered via his lawyer, Legear insisted that he was only slightly drunk, which somehow makes this kind of behavior moderately acceptable:
"Contrary to the judgment already made by some media, I was not in a state of deep intoxication and my blood alcohol level was only slightly above the legal limit."
The 25-year-old's driver's license has been ceased, and according to AP, he is likely to be charged with involuntary assault and intoxication. A court spokesman said there is no problem with Legear rejoining Terek Grozny "as long as he does not drive there himself."
The midfielder has a history of steering vehicles into buildings after nights out: In 2009 he was ordered to do 50 hours of community service after smashing his BMW X5 into a house in the early hours.
