Sean Couturier trims grizzly beard hoping to change luck (Photo)
Sean Couturier is a superstitious player. This is why after much deliberation, the growth on his face that's turned him from clean shaven to a pirate looking for booty remained when the Philadelphia Flyers took their team picture last week.
"I gotta stick with what's going well," Couturier told Flyers TV. "I’m kind of afraid to shave it and take the luck off us," he said last month.
Well, as the Flyers sit in the midst of a four-game losing streak and Couturier hasn't recorded a point in six games, it was time for him to try something new to reverse the current trend.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday morning before their game against the Buffalo Sabres, Couturier was looking a little less like Tom Hanks in "Castaway" and more like Colin Farrell and his constant facial foliage:
Now is a good time for Couturier to go down about two beard sizes hours before facing the Sabres. He's only recorded more points in his career against the New York Islanders and Ottawa Senators. In nine career meetings with Buffalo, Couturier has six points.
In the span of two years, Couturier went from a fresh-faced rookie to a wookie. That's a quicker progression than Sidney Crosby, who's made some improvements since his first Stanley Cup playoff beard back in 2007. This means there's plenty of hope for Nathan McKinnon as he enters his first postseason.
