Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Michael Del Zotto had a close shave against the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday night.

Del Zotto was on his first shift of the game – in his first game after nine healthy scratches, no less – when former Flyer Danny Briere attempted to step over him after Del Zotto fell in the corner.

He felt Briere’s skate blade hit his neck.

Luckily, Del Zotto wasn’t seriously injured, as he told CSN Philly:

“I’ve taken a few skates before so I know the feeling,” Del Zotto said. “I felt it, saw the blood and skated off.

“I put my glove there and saw the blood. I had one once on my side for 50 stitches. It sounds weird to say, but it’s nothing out of the ordinary I guess for me. I’m pretty fortunate it wasn’t worse than it was. It’s frustrating that happening after being out nine games and have that happen on the first shift.”

This one only took 20 stitches.

Curious what a 20-stitch throat slash looks like?

Are you sure?

Because Del Zotto tweeted out an Instagram of his injury.

OK, last warning, because here it is…
