Walk-on wide receiver will be first Seminole Indian to play football at Florida State
Every year, hundreds of college football prospects who have been overlooked seek to make an impact at big-time programs by walking on to the football team. Florida State preferred walk-on Justin Motlow fits into that category, but Motlow joining Florida State’s team is more significant than the average walk-on’s tale.
According to Warchant.com, the Florida State Rivals site, Motlow is one-fourth Seminole Indian. His father is half-Seminole, and his grandmother is 100 percent Seminole. He would be the first true Seminole to play for the Florida State Seminoles, a feat Motlow calls a “dream come true.”
“That would be a huge honor. To be able to say that I’m the first real Seminole to be playing on the Seminoles football team would be a huge honor,” Motlow said. “That’s not the main reason why I’m going there – I’ve always loved FSU and they are a great program. But to be able to have a chance to represent the Nation, that’s an extreme honor.”
Motlow is a 5-foot-11, 190-pound wide receiver from Tampa Catholic in Tampa, Fla. He put up over 1,000 yards receiving as a senior and also averaged 43.2 yards per punt as the team’s punter, but he did not receive any scholarship offers.
Motlow said he also wants the chance to try out at punter in addition to receiver.
“I just want an opportunity to compete with everyone and show them what I’ve got. Hopefully all goes well,” Motlow said. “I’d like to think I’m a smart football player. I do pretty well in the classroom and I have good awareness.”
Suiting up for the defending BCS champions will be a challenge for Motlow, but he feels that he is up to it.
“It’s a pretty big challenge, but I feel that I’m up to it. I feel like I can compete for a slot receiver position,” Motlow said. “I just want to play football and get a great education. I feel very blessed to have the chance to do both – if it works out.”
