Thursday update: Arrest in Stoops robbery, ‘Chopped’ invite, bad alibis

A recap of some news and notes from the last week that didn’t make it into their own posts.

Arrests were made earlier this week in the burglary at Bob Stoops’ home in Norman. From NewsOK.com:

Corey McCarty, whose age was not released, was detained by Oklahoma City police about 2 a.m. Saturday, according to Cleveland County court documents.

He was taken to Norman Police Department, where he waived his Miranda rights and confessed to the crime, the documents state.

McCarty admitted entering the home and taking property and a vehicle with an associate, police said. He was arrested on complaints of burglary, possession of stolen property, unlawful use of a credit card and grand larceny of an automobile.

Another unnamed suspect was also arrested. The two were picked up after attempting to use credit cards stolen during the burglary. I haven’t seen any reports of a) whether the Stoops family had a security system or b) if they did, how McCarty and the other suspect got around it.

Minnesota has booted linebacker Lamonte Edwards from the team for stealing an iPhone from a Gopher athletics facility. Edwards’ initial alibi was not the strongest:

Tracking software led police to Edwards, who first said the phone belonged to his cousin. When questioned later by U of M Police, he admitted he stole the phone from the weight room, according to the warrant.

USC and BYU have announced a three-game series to take place 2019 and 2023. Independent life continues to be good for the Cougars, who have their own ESPN deal, a schedule loaded with interesting opponents and a new deal with the Poinsettia Bowl. BYU also extended head coach Bronco Mendenhall through 2016.

The Trojans also announced in what is essentially a clerical move that their series with Notre Dame will continue until at least 2023. The two rivals have played every year since 1926, save for a hiatus during World War II.

In the weirdest story of the week by far, ex-Texas Tech player Ronnie Daniels broke into a New Mexico home and took a bath. It only got weirder when he was discovered by the owner of the house:

The mother said Daniels tried convincing her he lives there and they have children together. As soon as she mentioned the police, she said he took off running down the street getting chased by the dog. She added Daniels tried to scale a wall before officials caught and arrested him.

Surprising Daniels’ bold “I’ve lived her all along" strategy did not work out.
