Taysom Hill runs for 3 TDs as BYU destroys Texas

Saturday night’s Texas-BYU game was a tale of two halves. Well, for BYU’s offense it was anyway.

After managing to put just six points on the board via two Trevor Samson field goals in the first two quarters, quarterback Taysom Hill and the Cougars offense were unstoppable in the second half in a 41-7 win in Austin.

The Cougars reached the end zone on their first four drives of the third quarter, including three touchdown runs from Hill, the first of which came from 30 yards out and ended with a highlight reel hurdle over a Texas defender near the goal line.

In addition to his three scores and 99 yards on the ground, Hill also threw for 181 yards. Junior running back Jamaal Williams had similar success on the ground for the Cougars, gaining 89 yards on 19 carries, while Adam Hine scored twice.

It was a rough week off the field for the Texas, and that translated into its play on the field. Playing without four starters (QB David Ash and center Dominic Espinosa are injured; tackles Desmond Harrison and Kennedy Estelle are suspended) on offense, first-time starter Tyrone Swoopes couldn’t get much of anything going.

Swoopes threw for 176 yards and completed 20-of-31 attempts and managed to throw his first career touchdown to John Harris late in the third. That was a lone bright spot for an offense that turned the ball over four times, managed just 82 rushing yards as a team on 35 carries and converted only three of 15 third down attempts.

Things won’t get any easier for the Longhorns next week. Now 1-1, Charlie Strong’s team will face off with No. 11 UCLA at Cowboy Stadium in a primetime matchup. It remains to be seen if Ash, who was dealing with concussion symptoms following a Week 1 win over North Texas, will be available.

On the other side, BYU, now 2-0, will play its first home game of the season against Houston. A good showing could vault BYU into the top 25.
