Tate Forcier finally finds a home at San Jose State
Tate Forcier has finally found a place to play football.
After a summer that included signing a letter of intent with Miami, unexpectedly leaving Miami, being carted off to the hospital after an incident with a third-story balcony, and a brief flirtation with Hawaii, Forcier will play in collegiate ball at San Jose State.
"It felt right," Forcier said in a text message to the Bay Area News Group. "I loved the coaches and felt comfortable with them. I really believe I can help that team."
It probably felt right because in the end, San Jose State may have been the only FBS school to accept him. Last week, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser said the former Michigan quarterback did not meet Hawaii's academic standards and the school stopped pursuing him.
According to the San Jose Mercury News, Forcier took online classes to become eligible, is enrolling for the fall semester and will be in camp next week. Per NCAA transfer rules, Forcier won't be eligible to play until 2012.
Of the schools Forcier was chatting up, San Jose State definitely has the most need. The squad was ravaged by injuries in coach Mike MacIntyre's first season, which resulted in a 1-12 campaign. Sixteen players return this season, including almost everyone on defense, and the quarterback pool is pretty deep. When Forcier is eligible to play, he'll be competing with Blake Jurich, Dasmen Stewart and Joe Gray, an incoming freshman that MacIntyre has been raving about.
The year off should be good for Forcier, who's had some trouble with academics in the past. His poor grades made him ineligible for Michigan's bowl games last season and prompted his transfer. Since he can't compete for playing time this year, perhaps it would be a good way to ensure he's eligible for 2012.
