Steve Spurrier is getting a $700,000 raise on Thursday
It's not a bad time to be Steve Spurrier.
Of course, you could say that at almost any time. Such is the life of a former Heisman Trophy-winning football coach. But Spurrier's South Carolina Gamecocks won the Capital One Bowl on Jan. 1, finished fourth in the final AP Poll, and now he is getting a $700,000 raise.
South Carolina's Board of Trustees will vote on the raise Thursday morning.
While specific terms were not available for the entire staff, head coach Steve Spurrier is expected to receive a raise from $3.3 million to $4 million per year.
Spurrier received a two-year extension in 2012 that will keep him at USC through the 2017 season but a salary increase was not included in the deal. Spurrier had been given a $475,000 bump to $3.3 million after the 2011 season.
That moves Spurrier into the top 10 of highest-paid coaches in college football. Though it doesn't move him up in the SEC at all. He's still third behind Nick Saban at Alabama and LSU's Les Miles.
While his team went 12-2 this season, Spurrier should get the raise simply based off his 2013 trolling prowess. He had a fantastic back and forth with Clemson, got a great dig at Arkansas after his team blew out the Razorbacks, poked Tennessee and even had fun with star DE Jadeveon Clowney's proclivity to drive illegally fast.
