Report: SEC coaches not allowed to attend Michigan's camp

If you were wondering if any coaches would take Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh up on his open camp invitation, you can knock coaches from the SEC off your list of candidates.

SEC coaches have reportedly been told they can't attend Harbaugh's "Exposure U." The Michigan coach posted an open invite to the camp on Twitter amidst the ruckus around satellite football camps.

We're guessing that there weren't many coaches itching to go in the first place. Or that the invitation was more tongue-in-cheek than anything else.

Coaches aren't allowed to host camps outside of a 50-mile radius from their home campus. However, coaches are allowed to guest coach at camps outside the radius if they're not hosting the event, though the loophole is banned by the SEC (and ACC). So the ban on attending Harbaugh's camp makes sense.

The SEC and ACC would like to see the satellite camp practice banned entirely as Big Ten and other schools are taking advantage of their ability to do so. If the NCAA chooses to do so, Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick said he doesn't like the legal chances of defending the ban. His coach, Brian Kelly, has participated in satellite camps previously.

This debate isn't going to end quickly. Or very easily, it seems.

“The NCAA does not have a very good track record of limiting, without losing an antitrust lawsuit, economic opportunities for coaches,” Swarbrick said Tuesday via CBS Sports. “So they should be treading very lightly. The perception is these are school opportunities. A lot of these are coach opportunities purely. Imagine a rule that said, as was introduced years ago, coaches couldn't do national televised advertising because it created a recruiting advantage. … I wouldn't want to defend those lawsuits.”
