State Attorney: FSU RB Dalvin Cook to be charged with battery

Florida State running back Dalvin Cook is being investigated for battery in an incident the day before former Seminoles quarterback De'Andre Johnson punched a woman at a local bar.

Florida State issued a statement Friday afternoon that said Cook has been indefinitely suspended.

Cook is accused of punching a 21-year-old woman on June 23 outside of Clyde's and Costello's, a local Tallahassee establishment.

State Attorney Willie Meggs told ESPN.com Friday he will issue a warrant for Cook's arrest. He will be charged with misdemeanor battery.

According to ESPN, Meggs said "he met with the woman, who is not an FSU student, and a female witness on Friday. Cook's accuser presented Meggs photos of her injuries."

The alleged victim told ESPN.com her bottom lip was split and her nose was sore the next day. She identified Cook from a police lineup the following day.

The woman, who lives in Tallahassee, told ESPN.com that she was approached by a man who was not Cook outside of Clyde's and Costello's shortly after the bar closed on June 23. The woman said the man asked for her phone number, which she refused to give him.

"I told him I had a boyfriend and wasn't interested," said the woman, who spoke to ESPN.com on the condition she not be identified. The woman said the argument became heated, and then Cook punched her in the face several times. Her friend ran to a nearby Tallahassee police car, which wasn't occupied, so the woman called 911.

"They kept telling me they were football players," the woman said. "They kept telling me to Google them. They told me they were football players and they could buy me in two years."

A report in the Tallahassee Democrat says the woman plans to press charges.

Cook was a major contributor for Florida State in 2014. He had 1,008 yards rushing and 203 yards receiving with eight touchdowns. He was a five-star recruit and the No. 18 recruit in the class of 2014 according to Rivals.

Johnson was dismissed on Monday after surveillance footage of the incident was released showing him punching a woman at a bar. Johnson is charged with misdemeanor battery. His lawyer said he was acting in self-defense while five FSU players have been subpeonaed in the case.

An ESPN report earlier in June said Florida State athletes escaped charges 70 percent of the time when named as suspects from 2009-2014.

Cook was also listed as an associate in an assault case in July 2014. The case involved two men who allegedly brandished a firearm to a neighbor.
