North Carolina reportedly fires associate head coach for defense Vic Koenning

North Carolina has parted ways with Vic Koenning, who was the team's associate head coach for defense.

Sources confirmed the news to TarHeelIllustrated.com.

North Carolina finished the season 6-6 and had a four-game losing streak after starting the season 2-0 and the defense struggled throughout the season. The Tar Heels' defense was ranked No. 115 nationally in total defense.

North Carolina gave up almost 496 yards per game and 467 points in 12 games, a school record for points allowed. During the four-game losing streak, the Tar Heels gave up 70 points to East Carolina, 50 points to Clemson and 50 points to Notre Dame. The other game, a loss to Virginia Tech, saw the Hokies rack up 34 points. Tech's total against North Carolina was the third-most points it had scored all season.

Koenning was the head coach at Wyoming from 2000-2002 and served as Illinois' interim head coach at the end of the 2011 season after Ron Zook was fired. While he served as North Carolina's associate head coach for defense and coached the team's safeties, Dan Disch was North Carolina's defensive coordinator and cornerbacks coach.
