Nebraska stadium announcer allegedly stole money from elderly

Nebraska in-stadium announcer Patrick Combs is accused of taking thousands of dollars from two elderly women.

According to police, the now-former Memorial Stadium announcer had power of attorney status with two women, ages 88 and 92. He then used that to extract "more than" $363,000 from them. And one of them had dementia. He's facing five felony charges. They include theft and adult abuse and he could face up to 70 years in jail.

From the Lincoln Journal-Star, which has all the details on the devious allegations:

The bulk of the money came from the accounts of Beverly J. Mosher, an 88-year-old widow and longtime University of Nebraska-Lincoln employee who had dementia, the investigator wrote in an affidavit. Combs was a friend of hers.

Combs used Mosher's checking account between September 2014 and January 2015 to buy cars, pay off a car loan and credit cards, install carpet at his lake house and get brickwork done on an outbuilding at his Gretna home, Koenig-Warnke said.

Combs also gifted $150,000 and $100,000 to two of his family friends after having Mosher's power of attorney amended to allow gifting, an affidavit to arrest him states.

The 92-year-old woman was a friend of Mosher. According to bank records, Combs transferred $19,000 from her account into an unauthorized bank account and she said she never got $20,000 of her brother's estate.

Combs tried to take more from Mosher too. An attempt to transfer $1.75 million was blocked after investigators were tipped off by Adult Protection Services.

A doctor also said earlier this year that Mosher did not have the mental capacity to give Combs power of attorney in 2013 and 2014 after her husband's death.

Nebraska told the Journal-Star that Combs' contract will not be renewed until his legal issues are resolved.
