NCAA denies appeal of Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield; will be eligible in 2015

Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield will not be eligible for this season.

Mayfield, a Texas Tech transfer, received word last week that the NCAA was denying his request for immediate eligibility. Mayfield then tried to get Tech to release him, but the school denied the request.

Mayfield’s argument was that since he was a walk-on, he shouldn't be held to the same transfer restrictions as scholarship players. The NCAA didn’t agree and Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury, who wasn’t happy about the transfer, wouldn’t budge.

“Kingsbury will not let him go. It goes to Kingsbury,” Mayfield’s father, James Mayfield, told the Tulsa World. “It’s not a school rule. It’s arbitrary to the coach’s decision. Period.

“Kingsbury could have lifted it. Kingsbury won’t give in. That’s where it is.”

Mayfield will have three years to play two seasons with the Sooners once he’s eligible in 2015.

Mayfield was Texas Tech’s opening day starter in 2013 and started the team’s first five games. He was 218-of-340 passing for 2,315 yards and 12 touchdowns, but struggled with injuries and was ultimately replaced by current starter Davis Webb.
