Michigan freshman Jabrill Peppers to redshirt because of injuries

Michigan freshman Jabrill Peppers to redshirt because of injuries

Michigan DB Jabrill Peppers will take a redshirt and sit out the rest of the season.

Coach Brady Hoke announced the news on Wednesday, and it's not incredibly surprising given that the fresman has struggled with injuries in 2014. Hoke said he's currently dealing with a leg injury.

"We're going to redshirt him for this year," Hoke said via TheWolverine.com. "He and I have had a lot of different conversations. I've talked to his mother, to doctors, trainers and everybody that should be included in the conversation.

"A couple things he's done very well is take care of himself – he's done great with treatment, great with rehabs and all those things – and he's done a tremendous job in school right now, academically. He's excited about when he can get back on the field."

The New Jersey native was a five-star recruit in the class of 2014 according to Rivals and the No. 1 cornerback in the country. He was the No. 3 recruit overall, behind only Alabama DE Da'Shawn Hand and Texas A&M DE Myles Garrett.

Peppers has played in three games in 2014, recording eight tackles. By taking the redshirt now, Peppers will play in less than 30 percent of Michigan's games this season, making him eligible for a medical redshirt. The redshirt is worth more than trying to bring him back for a game or two in what has been an incredibly trying season for the Wolverines.

"He's improved, but he's not going to be where you want a guy to be who has that kind of ability," Hoke said. "He doesn't need surgery … he's improving as we move forward."
