Louisville QB Will Gardner out for season with knee injury

Louisville's Will Gardner needs surgery on his left knee and will miss the remainder of the season.

The team didn't specify the type of injury Gardner had and said the surgery would happen "at some point in the next several weeks." The injury, according to Louisville, happened Saturday against Boston College.

"It is really unfortunate and disappointing for Will because of how hard he has worked and how respected he is in the locker room," Louisville coach Bobby Petrino said in a statement.  "Will will continue to be an integral part of our program moving forward because of his leadership he has displayed and the respect he has in the locker room."

Gardner hurt his left knee earlier in the season against Florida International and has started seven of Louisville's 10 games this year. He has 1,669 yards passing, 12 touchdowns and three interceptions this season. He was replaced late in the game by Reggie Bonnafon.

Before he was injured against B.C., Gardner was 13-of-19 passing for 188 yards.

Bonnafon, a freshman, has thrown for 662 yards and run for 138 while accounting for seven total touchdowns this season. Bonnafon started against Wake Forest and Syracuse when Gardner hurt his knee earlier in the season and was replaced by Gardner in the second half of Louisville's loss to Clemson.

The Cardinals, 7-3, are off this week and play Notre Dame on November 22 before finishing the regular season against Kentucky on November 29.
