Louisiana-Lafayette QB Brooks Haack will transfer

Brooks Haack is leaving Louisiana-Lafayette.

Haack, a quarterback who started eight games for the Ragin’ Cajuns this season, announced the news on Twitter on Friday.

The program also confirmed the news in a press release.

"Brooks has been an integral part of our program for the past four years and is on pace to graduate from the University," ULL head coach Mark Hudspeth said in a statement. "We thank him for all that he has done for our program and we wish the best in his future endeavors."

Haack, a redshirt junior, started the season as the team’s starter, but lost the job to Jalen Nixon after three games. He later moved his way back up the depth chart and started the team’s final five games of the season, but was replaced by redshirt freshman Jordan Davis in the season finale after only two series.

Overall, Haack threw for 1,407 yards, five touchdowns and seven interceptions while also rushing for 83 yards and two scores in 2015. He previously served as the Cajuns’ No. 2 quarterback behind Terrance Broadway in 2013 and 2014 and redshirted in 2013.

Haack, who will pursue another opportunity as a graduate transfer, told The Advocate that he made the decision after meeting with offensive coordinator Jay Johnson last week.

From The Advocate:

“I’ve had a great, great four years,” Haack said. “There’s not one thing I would change about my experience. I met a lot of great people, met a lot of great fans, great friends, memories that I’ll have for a lifetime. There’s nothing about that that I would change.

“This could possibly be my last year of football in my life. I really want to take it to heart and succeed for my last year.”

Haack made the decision shortly after meeting with Cajuns offensive coordinator Jay Johnson last week. In that meeting, Johnson laid out the Cajuns’ plan for the 2016 season and Haack said “it just didn’t look promising.”

ULL head coach Mark Hudspeth said Haack will likely try to find a school with an offense that is “a little more tailored for his strengths and talents,” as opposed to the Cajuns’ run-heavy attack.

“I think after meeting with Jay, him and Jay had a really good conversation and he felt it was an opportunity for him to move on and find a home that would suit him and his talents,” Hudspeth told The Advocate.

Haack, who is set to graduate next month, said he hopes to find an opportunity to play near his home state, Texas.

Haack’s departure sets the stage for Davis to potentially assume the starting quarterback role in 2016. According to the Daily Advertiser, Hudspeth said last month that Nixon could move to running back.

ULL went 4-8 this season.
