Jake McGee, Virginia's leading receiver in 2013, will transfer
Virginia's passing game will be without its leading receiver from last season in 2014.
The school announced Friday that TE Jake McGee would transfer from the program. McGee had 43 catches for 395 yards and two touchdowns in 2013.
“I want to thank Jake for his contributions to the Virginia program and wish him the best,” Virginia coach Mike London said in a statement “When I came to UVa, he was one of the first players we recruited because he had committed to play for me at Richmond. I am very proud of the fact he will graduate from the University this spring. I hope he finds a program that fits his desires for his final season as a college player.”
A Virginia native, McGee will be eligible to play for his new team in 2014 because of graduation.
“I am very thankful for my time at UVa and I will always consider myself a Wahoo,” McGee said. “I have tremendous respect for Coach London and this football team, but I have decided to pursue my future career elsewhere. This is a personal decision and in no way should reflect on this team or its coaches.”
Virginia was 2-10 last year. After starting the season 2-1, including a win over BYU, Virginia lost its last nine games of the season.
Losing McGee is a big blow to an offense that struggled mightily. The Cavaliers only threw for 211 yards per game and scored 19.8 points per game, 111th in the FBS. With McGee's departure, Darius Jennings becomes the leading returning receiver. He had 38 catches for 340 yards and three touchdowns.
