Georgia S Tray Matthews dismissed from team

Georgia announced Tuesday that safety Tray Matthews was dismissed from the program.

“We are trying to make room for guys who want to do things right,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said in a statement.

In March, Matthews was one of four Georgia players arrested for attempting to deposit tuition checks twice.

Before the announcement, Matthews tweeted that either Auburn or Louisville would be his next school. If it's Louisville, he'd be the third former Georgia defensive back to go there this offseason.

Former Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham is now in the same capacity at Louisville and former Georgia CB Shaq Wiggins and S Josh Harvey-Clemons have already announced their intentions to play there.

Wiggins transferred this spring while Harvey-Clemons was dismissed from the team in February after multiple drug violations. WR Uriah LeMay, one of the players arrested with Matthews, announced his intention to transfer in May.

Matthews played in eight games last season and had 36 tackles. He was a four-star recruit in the class of 2013, according to Rivals.

He and Harvey-Clemons were also the two defenders involved in the "Prayer at Jordan-Hare" touchdown from Nick Marshall to Ricardo Louis that gave Auburn a late win over the Bulldogs.

Before Louis caught it, it looked like Matthews had an easy interception until he was hit by Harvey-Clemons and the ball popped into the air. (Yes, Georgia fans, the play still exists even if both of them are now gone.)

The play, and Auburn's SEC residence, also makes Auburn a curious choice for a transfer spot. Because Auburn is in the same conference as Georgia, Matthews would have to serve a one-year residence requirement at Auburn if he transferred there. During that time he couldn't be on scholarship and the year would count towards his eligibility.
