Furniture store owes nearly $1.5 million in rebates after Ohio State win

Approximately 500 customers are getting free furniture thanks to Ohio State's win against Oregon.

Like many other big-game promotions, Morris Furniture Company ran a money-back special before Ohio State's College Football Playoff National Championship matchup against Oregon. The terms were simple; if Ohio State, the underdog, won the game by more than 7 points, customers who purchased more than $1,999 in furniture got their money back.

As you know, the Buckeyes won 42-20. The total value of the reimbursed purchases is near $1.5 million.

The promotion was good at 15 Ohio-area Morris Home Furnishings and Ashley Home Furniture stores. As you can imagine, the people who are benefitting from the promotion are incredibly happy.

From the Dayton Daily News.

"They are thrilled,” Morris Home Furniture Store vice president of marketing and advertising Rob Klaben said. “The promotion created a lot of great conversations in our showrooms.”

A third-party company underwrote the promotion and will pay out the money, Klaben said. Customers will have to return to the store to fill out a claim form to get their money back.

Asked if his company regretted making the promotion, Klaben said, “Absolutely not.”

“It’s been a great story for the Buckeyes and it has created good buzz for our stores,” Klaben said.

The promotion ran for roughly the last half of December.

It's also fitting that the 2014 season ends with a free furniture giveaway. After all, it began with one too. A College Station, Texas, Ashley Furniture Store gave away $1 million in free furniture after Texas A&M beat South Carolina in the first big-conference game of the season in August.

We'll see if Ashley stores keep the promotions going in 2015.
