Family business: Joe Flacco’s younger bro to play Division II college football
This fall, Joe won't be the only son Steve and Karen Flacco can watch on the football field.
According to FoxSports.com, Mike Flacco, 26, is enrolling at the Division II University of New Haven, where he will play tight end. Mike is the younger brother of Baltimore Ravens quarterback and Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco.
New Haven head coach Pete Rossomando is excited about his potential:
"He's 6-6, 250 and can run. You can use those guys," Rossomando said with a laugh. "We worked him out, we were able to watch him run around. He's very raw and he needs some seasoning to get to that next level.
"But if he does the things we ask, the sky is the limit for him."
Mike was drafted out of the Community College of Baltimore County-Catonsville in the 31st round by the Baltimore Orioles in 2009. After finding some initial success at lower levels of the minors as a first baseman, he couldn’t really hit after being promoted to the High-A Frederick Keys in 2011. Earlier this year he was traded to the Red Sox organization for cash considerations, ending the possibility of two Flacco brothers playing across the Camden Yards/M&T Bank Stadium parking lots from one another.
The younger Flacco retired after the trade, and according to the FoxSports.com report considered attempting a direct jump to the NFL before deciding to try college first. The New Haven Chargers went 10-1 last year, their sole loss coming in the second round of the DII playoffs to the Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
