Dr. Saturday’s Too Early Top 10: No. 10 LSU

The 2014 season might be eight months away, but it's never too early to start thinking about the teams that could challenge for the new College Football Playoff. This week, we'll count down Dr. Saturday's Top 10 teams for 2014.

LSU Tigers
2013 record:
10-3, 5-3 SEC
Final AP ranking: 14

Bowl result: def. Iowa 21-14 Outback Bowl

Top returners: LT La'el Collins, QB Anthony Jennings

Top losses: DT Ego Ferguson, DT Anthony Johnson, WR Odell Beckham Jr., WR Jarvis Landry, QB Zach Mettenberger, S Craig Loston, RB Jeremy Hill

Overview: At the time of this post, ]offensive lineman La’el Collins had not yet made a decision as to whether he was staying for another season at LSU, but he would be an added boost to an LSU team that could have a resurgent 2014.

But a lot of that hinges on its recruiting class.

The Tigers have 18 commitments and 14 of those players are ranked as four or five-star recruits by Rivals.com. That class is headlined by running back Leonard Fournette, the nation’s top-rated running back and the third-rated player overall. His signing lessen the blow of Jeremy Hill deciding to leave school early for the NFL draft. And let's not forget tailbacks Kenny Hilliard and Terrence Magee, who combined for 936 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Combine that backfield with quarterback Anthony Jennings, who threw a game-winning touchdown against Arkansas after he came in in relief of an injured Zach Mettenberger and then led the Tigers to a win in the Outback Bowl, and four, perhaps five offensive linemen returning is Collins stays, and LSU could be scary-good next season.
