Hampton was well on its way to an NCAA Tournament win over fellow No. 16 seed Manhattan when guard Brian Darden stepped to the line with 24 seconds to go. As Darden swished his free throw, his teammates on the bench let loose with a unique celebration straight out of the 1989 baseball classic “Major League.”
That’s solid execution, though they did not quite nail the clap at the end like in the movie.
The win over Manhattan allows the Pirates to move on but a matchup with top-seeded Kentucky is next on the agenda. Hampton coach Edward Joyner Jr. knows his team will need a little divine intervention to get past the Wildcats.
