Breakfast Buffet: Pittsburgh loses Ashton Gibbs for two weeks

1. The notion that Pittsburgh is a team of interchangeable parts will be tested this month because the Panthers will have to play the next two weeks without their leading scorer. Pittsburgh coach Jamie Dixon announced Sunday that junior Ashton Gibbs sustained an MCL injury in a victory over Cincinnati on Saturday.

Even Michigan State forward Draymond Green acknowledges it's getting more and more difficult to have any faith in the Spartans after they fell 82-56 at Wisconsin on Sunday for their fifth loss in six games. "If you're not writing us off, I'll thank you and call you a fool," Green told the Lansing State Journal. "But we're gonna keep trying to turn this around."

3. The true test of whether Florida is a more mature team now will be whether the Gators can break their habit of following marquee wins with exasperating losses. As coach Billy Donovan pointed out to FoxSports.com's Jeff Goodman, Florida lost to Central Florida and Jacksonville immediately following wins over Florida State and Kansas State.

4. Underachieving Illinois (15-8, 5-5) may find itself sweating out Selection Sunday again this March unless the Illini manage to string a few wins together this month. Illinois missed the NCAA tournament two out of the past three years including last season when it was arguably the final team left out of the field.

5. In search of a couple more marquee wins to feel comfortable about its postseason chances, Cincinnati may have to make its NCAA tournament push without its top interior scorer. Yancy Gates remains suspended indefinitely for undisclosed reasons after already missing Saturday's loss to Big East favorite Pittsburgh.

Just when it seemed woeful San Diego might notch its first win streak of the season, Mychel Thompson came to the rescue for Pepperdine. The senior forward sank a 35-footer at the end of regulation to tie the game, enabling the Waves to eke out a 70-63 overtime victory..
