SprtsDash: Geno Smith, E.J. Manuel will face different challenges as rookies

There will be two rookie quarterbacks under center in New York this weekend, as Geno Smith takes the field for the Jets and E.J. Manuel does likewise for the Bills. Manuel, who had his knee scoped three weeks ago, completed 26 of 33 passes in the preseason with two touchdowns and no picks, but he wasn't asked to throw the ball down field very often. He averaged just six yards per pass attempt and hasn't played since August 16. He'll have the pleasure of facing off against master-schemer Bill Belichick and the Patriots in his first career start.

Smith was much shakier in the preseason, completing less than 60 percent of his passes and throwing three interceptions en route to a 54.6 passer rating. Smith will take on the Buccaneers, who went 4-12 last season, in his opener.

Doug Flutie (@DougFlutie) joined SportsDash to discuss the respective rookies' potential pitfalls, noting that while Manuel will face the stiffer challenge on the field Sunday, Smith's battles off the field will be much more challenging.
