Days after withdrawing from the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, Tiger Woods once again appeared to be in pain on the course during the second round of the PGA Championship. While he was well outside the cut line, Woods opted to complete his round, carding a 3-over 74. It was a decision that didn't sit well with one of his former teachers.
"He looked like his back was bothering him all on the front nine," Butch Harmon said in a Sky Sports video. "In all honesty, I was really upset with him for playing the back nine, for want of a better word."
Harmon coached Woods until 2004, and the former world No. 1 won eight major titles under his tutelage. He failed to produce the form of a major champion in 2014, though, a season that was mired by injury and one that ended Friday at Valhalla with Woods missing the cut in a major for just the fourth time in his professional career.
With Woods' least successful season as a pro now complete, Harmon expressed a desire for his former pupil to take more time to heal an injury for which he had surgery on March 31, but one which appears to have flared up each of the last two weeks.
"I really think that he wanted to show people he came here to try, but I just hope he’s not injured," Harmon said. "I hope now he goes home and gets the proper medical help and takes a rest and comes back to be the real Tiger Woods we want him to be."
