Goal Report: USMNT’s Diskerud to join Lampard, Villa at New York City FC

So Frank Lampard, David Villa, and Mix Diskerud walk into Yankee Stadium…

That could be the situation come July, as New York City FC reportedly will sign USMNT midfielder Mix Diskerud to a contract in the coming days.

In what would be a dramatic turn of PR events for the club after the Lampard loan extension debacle, Goal.com’s Ives Galarcep is reporting that Diskerud will sign with NYCFC, and not necessarily as a Designated Player. If true, it’s a stroke of genius for NYCFC director Claudio Reyna and head coach Jason Kreis.

From Goal.com:

Multiple sources have confirmed to Goal USA that NYCFC and MLS are putting the finishing touches on the signing of U.S. national team midfielder Mix Diskerud. Currently out of contract, Diskerud was mulling offers from Europe but now appears ready to sign to play in MLS after two previous failed attempts by the league to secure his services.

NYCFC holds the top spot in the MLS Allocation Order, which is used to determine which teams have first crack at the signing of U.S. national team players coming to MLS (with some high-profile exceptions). The team will use that top allocation spot to select Diskerud once MLS has succeeded in agreeing to a contract with the 24-year-old midfielder, sources tell Goal USA

It’s a very interesting move for Diskerud, and you can’t help but wonder if he’s swayed by the seemingly easy pipeline to the Premier League. The 24-year-old midfielder has 25 caps and 5 goals for the United States and has played in the UEFA Europa League with both Stabaek and Rosenborg. MLS is a step up from the Tippeligaen, and can be a good pathway to bigger things.

Diskerud had been linked with the Columbus Crew, Portland Timbers and Club Tijuana over the past few seasons, as well as a bevy of European stops including Celtic. Looks like both NYCFC and Orlando City are planning on being instant contenders in the East.

Oddly enough, Diskerud made waves with a borderline non-sensical Tweet regarding people being critical of City Football Group’s handling of Lampard’s loan from NYCFC to Manchester City:

Perhaps Mix’s says he’ll head to Manchester on loan for training? We kid… sort of.

With Mike Petke’s reported firing by the Red Bulls, what a busy evening in the Big Apple.
