Video: We have the first scary wreck of 2012

And we officially have our first "Wow, that was a little intense" wreck of the 2012 season, as Jeff Gordon went a-tumbling in the closing laps of Saturday night's Bud Shootout. Gordon was attempting to nudge Kyle Busch out of the way and set off a reaction that ended with Gordon himself cartwheeling sideways on the track apron. He was fine, the eternal reminder of how safe these cars are, but it was a spooky few moments as his car kept shedding piece after piece and didn't slow down.

"This was not how I wanted to start the 2012 season," Gordon said after clambering out of the flipped vehicle. "I've never been upside down in one of these cars. The hit to the wall was much harder than the rest of it. The roll was pretty soft and pretty easy. The protection we have inside of these cars is amazing because I didn't even hardly feel any of it. The toughest part is when you're laying upside down and you can't get out of the car. The roof was caved in a little bit and that was no fun."

NASCAR couldn't have asked for a better advertisement for the "we watch for the wrecks" crowd, and considering the way the field thinned out Saturday night, the Daytona 500 literally is any driver's race to win. If you're on the track, you're in the mix ... and also in the line of fire.

What a way to start the season. I'm glad that Jeff and all the rest are safe and not hurt. The skill of the drivers and the safety equipment are truly amazing. I love watching the driver's skill coming into play. kittyping

That was a minor wreck that slowly developed. I am a Smoke fan but I'd like to see a fresh new face win the cup this year.

military has a training program called heat...its made for rollover training in a hummvee if it were to happen and what to do....wonder if nascar has anything like that to prepare a driver for that ....just wondering...looked kinda rough but its all good that he is ok...dont pull for him on sundays but u hate to see anyone get hurt

Looks like the interview was edited so Gordon could wipe the dirt off of his face toward the end of the interview. Check it out from dirty to clean and gave him time to think through what he was going to say

I thought I'd never see the day that Jeff Gordon would be in a rollover in his NASCAR career. I am not one of the Gordon haters, but that was the last thing I expected to see last night.

The intimidator would have just pushed the car back over and continued racing.

Hats off to Kyle for one helluva race. He was wrecked about 4 or 5 times and still had the guts and talent to come back and win the race. Congratulations. Now, if he could just learn to keep his mouth shut and let his driving do the talking, he would earn a lot more fans. Go18.

Pretty exciting race. Its a shame so many cars got knocked out, 25 cars fighting for the win would have been better than... six?

If nascar can only figure out why a car to the left of another one automatically causes a wreck.

I'm a huge 24 fan, hate he wrecked & thank God he's ok, but I have to say I LOVE seeing that he's got the HUNGER to win...& since so many of us "COMPLAINED" about the tandum racing, I feel Nascar deserves a BIG THANK U for giving us the Pack racing back, I'm know it's not perfect but IT"S BETTER :)

Jeff Gordon is a better racer than any of the other drivers hands down, even on his roof. and i know people will say JJ won 5 in a row. i say Bullsh..t. Get back to me when winning means something again, hell now all u have to do is stay close in the points and wait for the last ten races to finally do some racing or get lucky and win a few races. Then Nascar wants to call that person a Champion. Race the whole time, No points, No second places, only thing that matters is a win the one with most is the CHAMPION!!!!!!!!!!
