Provisional for past champions unfair, Gordon says

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Robby Gordon finished the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season 38th in the owner standings, three spots and 160 points from 35th. It was a critical miss for Gordon's underfunded, self-owned effort, as the top 35 teams are given guaranteed starting spots for the first five races of 2012.

That meant Gordon wasn't a lock for the 54th Daytona 500 — and could miss the race for the first time since the year he opened his own NASCAR team in 2005.

But Gordon avoided that in Thursday's Gatorade Duels at Daytona — the qualifying races that set the grid for the 500 — and raced his No. 7 in to the field thanks to a ninth-place finish in the first race. He picked up one of four spots open to previously unqualified drivers in the qualifying races, and then railed on how another driver — Terry Labonte — joined the field.

"Obviously I [have] a lot of respect for Terry," Gordon began. "This is not a Terry Labonte thing. There's only eight cars that make the Daytona 500. He takes one of those spots, now seven guys make the Daytona 500. Four make it on qualifying races, three make it on speed. We're a small team, too. I guess I should hire [past champion] Kurt Busch and I could put my other car in the show, too. It's just not right."

Labonte, the 1996 NASCAR Sprint Cup champion, was locked in to the Daytona 500 by virtue of being the most recent series champion not already in. Despite having just the 31st-fastest speed in qualifying, Labonte was able to bank on a 16-year-old accomplishment to lock his way into the Daytona 500. The lock was so sure that Labonte, driving an underfunded Ford, was a start-and-park in Gordon's same qualifying race. Labonte completed just 12 of the 60 laps in the first Gatorade Duel, with the team announcing "vibration" as his reason for not continuing.

Of course, "vibration" couldn't be further from the truth. Labonte and his FAS Lane Racing team, used one of NASCAR's old-as-time rules that guarantees a spot in a race for the most recent past series champion not already qualified. Labonte, who won his second NASCAR Sprint Cup title in 1996, was that guy and made a decision knowing that the small team he drove for couldn't afford to wreck their Ford before Sunday's race.

Gordon understands that logic — he played the start-and-park game in 2011 — but that didn't change his ill will toward the champion's provisional rule.

"I think that should be based if you were with that team when you win the championship, not just because you win a championship, because that takes a spot from the teams that are working really hard to get in to the Daytona 500," Gordon said.

"Why take a free ride when the rest of us have to bust our butts to get in to the 500? It is what it is. It's the rules."

that would make it a whole lot more interesting wouldnt it? ... but then again I would sure prefer to watch Terry Labonte race than robbie gordon anyway

well there goes the sponsers and nascar if that happens

Well, he was faster in qualifying than Robby, careful what you wish for there bud because he still would have been in the race had it been on speed alone like the fans would like to see.

It was a stupid comment no question, Labonte will run good Sunday, just watch. He's no slouch even at his advanced age

Do not like lucky dog, do not like top 35 and do not like past provisionals. But it is Baby France playpen so it is his rules for the moment, maybe, perhaps.

Race back to the checker and wide open on pit road!

Isn't the real issue that small teams can't compete against the well-monied teams so they do whatever they can to get into the field? Terry Labonte has always been a good driver who made the most with what he had. Robbie should do the same.

Terry Labonte's qualifying speed was 191.522 which was better than 13 other drivers that made the Daytona 500 field including big mouth Robby Gordon [188.229]. If those 13 drivers finished higher than T. Labonte then this is a new story! Right now this nothing to do about nothing.

Maybe so but terry will start and park it.

And Robby will start and wreck it. He should keep his mouth shut.

I like Robby mainly because he's not a clone of every other driver in the sport with that being said i've always been in favor of the champion provisional even when DW was making every race because of it. They earned that one spot let them use it.

past champion provisional is fine, it the top 35 in points rule that sucks. he wants to complain, he should be #$%$ about teams selling their points to each other aka Stewart/Patrick getting them from Tommy Baldwin. they should get rid of the top 35 rule and have qualifying races for all events would get rid of the start and park teams.

The top 35 rule was made to protect the series regulars who run the entire season and it only protects them for the first 5 races. The past champion provisional as well as the 43rd starting position were created to ensure Richard Petty made the field. I don't have a problem with either. Fans want to see the stars and Terry is certainly a star. If Gordon was so concerned about it he could have hired Terry. Robby made the field so I don't know what his problem is...selling points doesn't seem right.

That's just like society today and especially in NASCAR to forget the people who built the sport. Normally 42 cars get in based on speed can we not remember a hero of the sport and let it go. The 43rd spot in a NASCAR race is not going to affect anybody so let a former champion have a moment in the sun.

None of this matters. ALL of the race coverage will be about Danica Patrick, how tough she is, what a good driver, blah, blah, blah. She is the Anna Kournikova of NASCAR.
    • Me  •  2 months ago
This is only an issue with him because he wasn't locked in and certainly will never be able to use a champions provisional.

I don't like provisionals, but...Robby Gordon whining about how something isn't fair? Go figure.

I am not opposed to the champion's provisional, but it should expire after, say, ten years.
    • buckweat  •  Chicago, Illinois  •  2 months ago
he,s still a good driver! there are still a lot of drivers out there they just dont have a good team. they could teach some of the the youg drivers about recpect!

Stupid rule that allows crap cars to get into races. Bill Elliot has been doing this for last few years, for the Wood brothers as well as others. Surprisingly enough when has past champion provisionals are done for years so is he. Time to let the cars speeds in qualifying stand for getting into a race or not. Start and parks suck and are bad for the sport.

Unfortunately, the top 35 is in there because of sponsors whining about potentially paying and then not getting their cars in the race. If NASCAR takes away the top 35, they'll lose sponsor money. As for the past champions thing, I think its goofy that no matter your age or how often you drive, you get a free ride in. I agree there should be a statue of limitations on a champs provisional...say 7 or 10 years max.

The Series Champion Provisional should be thrown out.
The "start and park" is a travesty and a team that pulls that crap should be fined.

"because that takes a spot from the teams that are working really hard to get in to the Daytona 500," Gordon said.
So is Robby saying that Terry Labonte's team didn't work hard? TL's team is a small underfunded team too...

I don't like this top 35 crap, If I wanted to start a 4 car team I would already be behind the eight ball...what incentive is that for a new owner to start cup racing? Lets see what happens when only 30 cars show up and 8 are start and parks.
