UFC 144 comeback: Boetsch pulls off miracle against Okami; Shields gets by ‘Sexyama’

With some guts, power and toughness, Tim Boetsch turned a trip back down the middleweight ladder into an opportunity to legitimately call out top-five fighters at 185 pounds.

After getting schooled for two rounds in every aspect of the game, Boetsch landed some huge shots to finish Yushin Okami at the 0:54 mark of the third round at UFC 144 in Tokyo, Japan.

[Video: Boetsch outduels Okami with power and guts]

Boetsch got picked apart in the first by Okami's boxing. The Japanese veteran then turned to his vaunted ground-and-pound game in the second. Okami outlanded Boetsch 47-26 over the first two rounds. With Boetsch down 2-0 and his face busted up, the American had to go for broke.

He came out looking for the home run shot landing some effective kicks early before grabbing Okami's head and blasting him with an uppercut. Okami stumbled backward and took a deep breath, but Boetsch didn't allow him to collect himself. He followed Okami around the cage and landed another good combination. The completely stunned Okami was out on his feet. That's when Boetsch grabbed his head again and dug in deep to land three more uppercuts. Okami went down in a heap after the third and referee Leon Roberts had to jump in to save him.

"It still hasn't settled in yet. The first two rounds weren't good, but I won the third round and that's what counts. Yushin hit me harder than I expected, but I was standing at the end of his range so it was kind of my fault. I knew I had to move forward, but the upper cuts were a spur of the moment thing. Awesome night overall," said Boetsch.

After racing out to a 10-2 start with the UFC, Okami has now dropped two straight. Boetsch (15-4, 4-1 UFC) is a perfect 3-0 at middleweight.

Shields wins favor with the judges

There's no mistaking what Jake Shields wants to do. A jiu-jitsu ace, he efforts to get his opponent to the ground. He couldn't accomplish that against Yoshihiro Akiyama, so turned to Plan B and got the victory.

Shields (27-6-1, 2-2 UFC) landed lots of short strikes and many leg kicks to earn the nod from the judges, 30-27 on all three cards. He sealed the fight down the stretch by scoring three takedowns late. He also got Sexyama's back and threatened with a choke in the final 30 seconds.

Some onlookers thought Akiyama (13-5, 1-4 UFC) did enough to win. His volume wasn't high enough on the the feet, but he did score three awesome judo throws/trips. He was also successful in defending 9-of-11 takedowns. Unfortunately, that just doesn't score enough with judges. According to Compustrike, Shields outlanded Akiyama 120-58.

This was Akiyama's debut at 170 pounds. The move paid off. He was certainly competitive with one of the top welterweights in the worlds. He looked strong at the weight and unlike his previous fights at middleweight, his energy remained pretty constant into the late stages of the fight.

        By fighting hacks. The End.

        Q) How did Fedor amass an impressive record? A) By fighting cans.

        Q) Could a mediocre hack-job like B.J. Penn have an unbeaten record? A) Sure, just let him fight the low end of the talent pool forever ad infinitum. But, since he was fighting in the UFC, he could not go that route. Thus he fought decent and excellent fighters. The result is that he has a shoddy looking record. Note how the Old Strikeface guys and some Jap guys can look pretty as a rose on paper. But then they come to the UFC where "give-me" fights are not the norm for the duration of a guy's career. They eventually lose and get exposed.

It was not even close, so Sheilds landed more jabs, so what???? He got his #$%$ thrown like a kid. Anyone who disagrees??!!! Get thrown, then jabed, see which hurts more. You fools dont know anything. Akiyama got screwed. Even if they took a ooint for holding, he still won the 1, 2 rounds....which would have made the fight a draw.

Great comeback win for Boetsch. Okami looked great for 2 rounds and was totally outclassing Boetsch. The guy showed a ton of heart.

Shields desperately needed a win. Sexiyama seems like a hand picked opponent. We'll see what's next for Jake. He hasn't been impressive in the UFC.

He would get owned by anyone with any real skills. The guy is a hack tough-man competitor. He is not an mixed martial artist. What art does that guy know? He knows how to swing like a tough guy....He showed that he can get dry-humped by a powerless lay-n-pray guy in Okami (who is so overrated it is not funny).

Nevertheless, he pulled out a win and knocked Thunder out! He has skills and he went down to middleweight because he was too small for LW.

@Riley, Boetsch has real skills! He's a decent boxer and has talent in judo! The guy has significant takedowns, slamming David Heath on his head and performing a great hip throw against Nick Ring. And yes, he was outboxed for 2 rounds against Okami, but he came back and knocked him out in the last round. Which shows he has heart! Not a top 10 contender yet, but the guy shows talent!

Can't believe Shields is the same guy who defeated Dan Henderson. Jake has not looked good at all in the UFC

Dan had back issues that fight.

2 things. i really believe Shields is a better fighter at MW (Just like Hendo was always better at LHW) And 2, remember how he beat Hendo, simpily by staying on top of him. In his UFC fights, he fought people with good takedown defense. And as a result, has never looked real good (even in his victory over martin Kampmann and Akiyama)

jake "I lay on people and look busy" shields is so boring. The guy has no power and couldn't knock a guy out if he needed to.

Anyone else think Kid Yamamoto is kicking himself after watching the replay of his fight when he sees how wide open Lee's body was when he was hurt up against the fence? Talk about a lost opportunity!

Akiyama got screwed. Even if you take away a point for holding the cage, it should have been a tie in that case. I watched the fight with 9 people, seven of the nine also said Akiyama won. When you get your ##$%$ thrown, 3 times, and its the most impressive thing at happened in the fight, that's a win! He won the first two rounds with those throws, (takedowns) and lost the last round cause he got taken down. Why judges dont score throws in beyond me. A throw is more vicious takedown then say a one leg takedown, yet somehow judges score wrestling takedowns more. Judging needs to be improved.

you say he scored three late takedowns (Shields) yet Akiyama defende 9 of 11 takedowns, how about a proofreader Cofield you're almost as bad as Chase when it comes to your writing

This was like the anti-brazil. All the japanese fighters lost. The only one who won was Gomi, and he was figting another japanese fighter! Its going to be hard for the UFC to fire up the japanese market because they just dont have legit japanese contenders. Okami is/was the best highest ranked one they had and he lost.

Wrong. Fukuda won and so did another.

Boetsch Okami fight was awesome. Boetsch hit him with some crazy uppercuts, props to Okami for taking as many as he did. I watched the fight a couple times and you can hear a loud sound when Boetsch landed throughout the fight. I thought Okami was going to win this fight.
It was an awesome night of fights. Kudos to all the fighters especially Frankie Edgar for being hand down the toughest man on the planet.

Watching the first two rounds of the Boetsch-Okami fight, I was wondering where Boetsch's killer instinct went...and then the third round came. Nice KO. Watching the Shields-Akiyama fight was terrible. Akiyama had the 2 best moments of the fight, which were both cool tosses. I really wanted to see Shields lose, especially because of how soft he punches, but Akiyama did nothing to win. They both deserved to lose.

Shield's learned how to "strike" by watching two baked Diaz goons slap each other repeatedly without inflicting damage. Sort of like when your little cousin swats at you and you hold out your hand laughing hysterically because the taps tickle more than anything else. Go Shields!

Sexyboy is all hype! HOWEVER, I love the Judo. I miss Karo's throws. He was the only guy who really used his Judo. I looked forward to him tossing guys around. It would be great if more Judo was mixed into the arts!
