Dominick Cruz back in the gym

Dominick Cruz may be ready to return to the cage by Aug. 30. (Special to Yahoo Sports)

Dave Doyle recently spoke with Bellator lightweight Michael Chandler and asked about his Alliance teammate Dominick Cruz. "The Dominator" has been plagued by multiple knee injuries, which have kept him out of the cage for two years and prompted the UFC to strip him of his bantamweight title.

"He's doing good," Chandler said of Cruz. Cruz was set to finally return Feb. 1 against then interim champion Renan Barao but another injury forced him out. Instead, his rival Faber fought and lost to Barao. According to Chandler, however, Cruz is once again on the path to recovery.

"He's back in the gym this week," he said.

"He's not full sparring, but he's drilling and he's doing grappling and stuff and getting into that kind of stuff."

Chandler called his teammate Cruz a "warrior," and claims that the young former champ is driven to get back into title form.

"He's more motivated than he's ever been," Chandler said.

"He wants to go out and prove that he should have held on to that bantamweight title...The UFC was great with him, gave him a fair chance. Now he has the opportunity to hopefully get healthy, beat one or two guys and hopefully get a title shot."

Cruz is perhaps a long way off still from fighting again but we're glad he's made this step of beginning training again, already. Who do you want to see Cruz fight first when he returns to UFC action?
