John Mellencamp’s son will walk on to college football team after not playing prep football

Of all the strange walk-ons who will hope to earn a spot on Duke's football team this fall, none are more unique than Hud Mellencamp. Not only is he the son of a legendary rocker, he hasn't even played football before.

Making matters even more bizarre, not only is Mellencamp -- the son of rock star John Cougar Mellencamp -- a competitive football novice, he stands just 5-foot-11. Clearly, making an impact for the Blue Devils squad would be a far, far stretch for young Hud Mellencamp.

The news of Hud Mellencamp's future plans were first announced on Twitter by Bruce Feldman, then followed up by Lost Letterman and Off the Bench, among other sources. Interestingly, there actually are a couple of reasons why Mellencamp could actually have an outside shot at making the team. First, he never had a chance to play competitive football because he was home schooled.

Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, Hud Mellencamp is a heck of an athlete. As a 14-year-old, the teenager won a 132-pound title in the Golden Gloves tournament while boxing for the Indy Police Athletic League.

Would Mellencamp have had a better shot at breaking through with Indiana, the squad his father is an admitted superfan of? Perhaps. Yet that clearly wasn't Hud Mellencamp's plan. Given the fact that he's going to walk on to a football team without any high school football experience, maybe he should keep sticking to his own plan anyway. That seems to be working out OK for Hud Mellencamp so far, and at worst, he'll have a chance to earn a degree from one of the country's most prestigious institutions.

That's not a bad deal for anyone.
